Note: Windows XP/Vista may be used as the operating system for a PC but for the best experience Windows 7 SP1 or later is recommended.

Recommended Software

Adobe Acrobat Reader is recommended for pdf files, as it is free, can be downloaded from the Adobe web site, and is an industry standard.
To download Adobe Reader go to: https://get.adobe.com/reader

There are several videos to view during this course. The standard Windows video player is the Windows Media Player. Windows 10 has problems with mp4 videos, which are related to the H264 codec.

Recommended Microsoft Office Version
Microsoft Office 2013/2016 is the recommended Office version for this course although Microsoft Office 2010/2007 is acceptable. Keep in mind that if you use an Excel 2007 version, there will be some Ribbon differences. The Excel Start Screen and Mini-Toolbar will not be available since those features were rolled out in later Excel versions. Using a Microsoft Office version prior to 2007 is not acceptable since the versions are of a different configuration.

Excel Online As Alternative
If you do not have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, you may still take this course using the free online Excel version. To use the free online version of Excel go to: www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/excel

Differences between Online Excel and Standard Excel are as follows:

  • There are some minor mouse symbol differences but they work the same way.
  • The Ribbon looks a little different since it does not include all of the feature icons that the Standard Excel Ribbon contains.
  • The default way of saving files is through the Cloud (Microsoft OneDrive) although you may download a copy of the file and save the copy to the hard drive.

These differences are addressed in the course videos and the Student Guide.

Browser Required
Students must have a web browser installed on their computers to view and interact with online courses. Internet Explorer 11 is the recommended browser, although you may use a previous version but may experience some minor issues during the course.
The above policy applies to the browsers listed below. You should be using the latest browser version for the best experience, but if you use an older version you may experience some minor issues.

You may also use Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla (Firefox), and Safari browsers.
