Converting an Excel 20​03 Workbook into Excel 2016 Workbook
Converting an Excel 2003 Workbook into a 2016 Workbook
*If you open an Excel 2003 file or earlier, you will see the workbook name being used in the Compatibility Mode, as shown in FIGURE 1. Notice the Excel 2003 format uses the .xls extension:​​

**If you’re not sharing the workbook, you can convert it to the Excel 2007-2016 file format (*.xlsx) to take advantage of all new Excel 2016 features (select File tab, select Info category, and press the Convert button as shown in FIGURE 2 below (The Convert button will only appear if you’re in the Compatibility Mode):​​

After pressing the Convert button, you will see this dialog box, shown in FIGURE 3 below. Press the OK button.

Press the Yes button to close the workbook and reopen it as an .xlsx (Excel 2016) workbook (FIGURE 4).

The old Excel 2003 file has now been converted to a 2016 file. Notice the workbook name change reflects the new Excel 2016 format with the .xlsx extension as shown below in FIGURE 5:
